cannabis is an herb i’m very connected to.

in the 80s, my paternal grandfather was arrested for selling weed to provide for his family. he was behind bars for most of my life. i have vivid memories of visiting him as a child. witnessing life in prison made an impact and i still uncover beliefs stemming from that time. my fear and disdain for cops for one.

for a long time, i blamed cannabis for the pain it caused my family. but when i started partaking regularly myself in my early 20s, i wanted to educate myself more. i learned that it wasn’t the plant at all. it’s systemic racism, the war on drugs, mass incarceration of black and brown folks at the root of the deep wounds.

that nauseous feeling in my stomach is valid when i read that in 2018, about 80% of cannabis business owners are white. profiting off the same herb my grandpa spent years in prison for. cannabis is herbal medicine and no one should be in prison for it while privileged folks just collect.

this is more than just a candle. they’re a reflection of my intergenerational healing and reclaiming this sacred herb.

i topped this one with chamomile flowers and marigold petals that i dried myself. personally i love adding ground chamomile for my nightly smoking ritual these days! *and no, burning this candle will not get you high. but it makes a nice sesh bud-dy :)
